Louisa Kress reigns once again as German Mulled Wine Queen
11th official at the Christmas market in Trier 2025
Trier. This year, 31-year-old teacher Louisa Kress will once again hold this office between the main market and the cathedral courtyard in Trier. Louisa is now entering her third term of office and is the charming ambassador for Moselle wine glühwein. As her reign lasts only a few weeks a year, it is possible to extend the office at the Trier Christmas market up to three times.
Louisa has already been the representative for this traditional hot drink for the past two years and has now taken advantage of the final option to extend her term. “The Trier Christmas market is very close to my heart and I am delighted to be back as ambassador for mulled wine,” says Louisa Kress, adding: “At our Trier Christmas market, every guest experiences a special romantic magic amid the sparkling lights. Its award as the best Christmas market in Germany in 2024 proves its uniqueness.”
Background: Eight dedicated mulled wine queens have held this hot seat so far
How can the image of mulled wine at German Christmas markets be revamped?“ The Trier Christmas Market Working Group asked itself this question 16 years ago. The answer was the invention of the ”German Mulled Wine Queen" as a registered word and figurative mark.
The first holder of the office was Trier student Nadine Thome in 2009. She was elected by a jury of experts for a term of two years. In 2011, the crown was handed over to her successor, Tatjana Conrad. The 20-year-old was a European secretary from Serrig on the Saar. The third German Mulled Wine Queen, Sabine Braunert, also came from the same field of study. Born in Erfurt, she took office in 2012 at the Domfreihof. Anne-Catherine Ferber was the first “Trier Wine Queen” in 2013 as “German Wine Queen.” As the granddaughter of Trier winemaker Georg Fritz von Nell, the geography student had already become familiar with wine during cellar tours in her childhood. She then extended her term of office until 2014.
Another expert followed in 2015. Sarah Schmitt made headlines as the longest-serving holder of the title. The then student of food technology at Trier University of Applied Sciences was actively involved in the family winery “König Johann” in Konz-Filzem. It was only after her three-year term that Jordis Schweigstill took over for the 39th Trier Christmas Market on November 27, 2018. The 21-year-old was a commercial trainee at the Trier sparkling wine producer Saar-Mosel-Winzersekt GmbH. Verena Müller took over the role for the 40th Trier Christmas Market in 2019. Born in Trier, she worked as a sales assistant in a retail store in Trier city center. During the Corona years, there was no mulled wine queen in Trier. After a three-year hiatus, Louisa Kress became the new “German Mulled Wine Queen” at the 43rd Trier Christmas Market in 2023. Following her second term last year, she will also reside at the 45th Trier Christmas Market.
The German Mulled Wine Queen's responsibilities include press and public relations work for Winzerglühwein. In addition to making personal appearances and welcoming groups of visitors from Germany and abroad, her tasks include maintaining the Trier Christmas Market's Facebook and Instagram pages. With well over 21,000 Facebook fans, the Mulled Wine Queen has a special role to play here.
